Importance of NCEES FE Exam

NCEES provides professional licensure to engineers, to maintain engineering standards throughout US. While one may question the importance of standardization, engineers should know better. Licensure is the only way to ensure that public safety, health and quality standards do not deteriorate over time.

How to get licensed?

If you wish to get licensed in the future, there are two exams that you'll first need to wade through. The first one named Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is taken up by individuals during or right after undergraduate engineering studies. The FE exam is the first step that leads one to a Professional Engineering (PE) license. Once the FE review exam is cleared, you'll need to work for at least 4 years under a PE to be eligible for the PE exam.

The Fundamentals of Engineering Exam

The Fundamentals of Engineering Exam is a computer-based test that is administered throughout the year at NCEES approved test centers. With about 110 multiple-choice questions asked, the test helps you to check your engineering knowledge. Here's why FE exam is important:

Adds more value to your resume

You may have scored excellent grades in your undergraduate engineering studies, but you might still be missing something. Potential employers look for candidates that are competitive and dedicated towards their profession. So, if you're planning on taking up a job right after you complete under graduation then passing the FE exam gives you an edge over the others.

Proves that you think long-term

Every organization wants more PE professionals on-board. Clearing the FE exam gives the employers an impression that in four years of time, a PE exam is on your cards. Not only does it mean that you'll be a vital addition to the company, it also assures them of employee retention for at least four years.

High earning potential

The FE exam opens up the doors to PE licensure increasing you earning potential. This could be achieved by either working for a company or setting up your own company. If you're one who values independence more than anything else, it is necessary to prepare well ahead and take the FE exam.

Professional competency

Every organization requires an individual with high ethical standards, continuing education and professional competency. Passing the FE exam indicates that you will meet the desired standards.
